JODY STECHER with MILE TWELVE: Instant Lonesome and the Twinkle Brigade (Don Giovanni Records)
Nine new songs from Jody, plus five interpretations of lesser-known material. Song topics include domestic contentment & its opposite, lawless rural life back in the day, war, political idiocy, car theft, an expanding waistline, actions & consequences, false-hearted love, an outlaw, a supernatural train, an unusual diet, and a femme fatale. The band -- BB Bowness (banjo), Korey Brodsky (mandolin), Ella Jordan (fiddle), Nate Sabat (bass), and Evan Murphy (guitar) -- is on fire, ignited by the spark of Jody’s impassioned singing and unique guitar playing. The music is blues-tinged, old-time flavored bluegrass, but nothing here is generic or predictable. Uplifting, riveting music made by alert, able, committed musicians with something to say and the musical means to say it, Instant Lonesome and the Twinkle Brigade is an intense and memorable new record.
AJ LEE & BLUE SUMMIT: City Of Glass (Signature Sounds Records)
AJ Lee & Blue Summit are an award-winning, energetic, and technically jaw-dropping bluegrass band quickly rising on the national roots music scene. Based in Santa Cruz, the group met as teenagers, picking together at bluegrass festivals before forming what’s become the hardest-working band in acoustic music. Their new album not only spotlights AJ Lee’s songwriting and once-in-a-generation voice, but also showcases the Bakersfield sound of guitarist/vocalist Scott Gates, the dynamic and versatile fiddling of Jan Purat, and the guitar wizardry and indie rock influence of Sullivan Tuttle, the younger brother of Molly Tuttle, who is featured on one of the album's songs. City of Glass is a spellbinding collection that covers the musical spectrum from straight-ahead bluegrass to country soul to bluesy Americana to California folk.
