Spring session of Lafayette oldtime stringband class
Old Time Stringband Music Class with

(no class May 19) with a concluding party!

Come learn new tunes, play with friends, and practice your instrument in a pleasant and supportive environment. Harry Liedstrand (fiddle), Cindy Liedstrand (guitar), and David Brown (banjo) are all experienced musicians who have played in string bands, performed/taught at festivals, and played for dances.
Participants should already know the basics of how to play their instruments. We will be learning by ear so bring a recording device. The fiddles will focus on melody and bowing. Banjos will concentrate on both rhythm and melody in the claw hammer style. Guitars will focus on rhythmic back-up accompaniment with chords and bass runs. Other instruments such as ukulele and mandolin are welcome.
Over the course of 6 weeks we will alternate between a Repertoire Session one week and Learning a New Tune the next. We will survey some of the 50 tunes we have taught over the last 9 sessions during the 3 Repertoire Sessions. We hope to cover 3-5 tunes per repertoire class. Participants will receive a list in advance of planned tunes and a dropbox link with source and instructor recordings. On the alternate 3 weeks we will Learn a New Tune and break out into our groups of fiddle, guitar, and banjo to practice and review what we have learned. This will be an ambitious schedule. David will be playing for classes and dances, and available for individual or group lessons. The camp schedule also includes plenty of free time for jamming. Last year, there were enough banjo players (or would-be banjo players and loaner instruments) to hold an afternoon banjo class. There is also an early morning beginner fiddle class taught by Susan Worland.
