New Application Process for IBMA KOB

Kim Fox from Nashville, Tennessee produces a Kids on Bluegrass (KOB) program during the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) World of Bluegrass (WOB) now held in Raleigh NC the last week of September.  The next event will be held Tuesday through Saturday September 26 through September 30, 2017.  In prior years, the CBA has selected young musicians for the IBMA program during our own Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival in June.  Kim now wants the names of the four CBA kids attending the IBMA event by March 2017 so we have an opportunity to change our selection process.  We have chosen to open the application process to ALL our young CBA musicians.  There is no requirement for participation in our own KOB or Youth Academy or a paid spot on any of our stages.  The requirements for applying are:  must be a current CBA member, must be no older than 17 by September 30, 2017 and must be available to attend.  The CBA Youth Program does issue a modest stipend to each selectee and IBMA provides tickets to the World of Bluegrass but hotel rooms and airline tickets are not included.

The young musicians selected to participate in the IBMA KOB program start rehearsals with Kim and her team on Thursday (9-28-17) and two performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday.  Kim’s program features about two dozen of the finest young musicians from across the country.  We have been honored to introduce the remarkable talent we have in the CBA to the rest of the country.

The process for applying follows:

1.     Fill out the written application at  (a Google doc).

2.    Submit a single YouTube video containing three (3) songs.  For strictly instrumentalists, the video should demonstrate a variety of tempos and keys so the selection committee can evaluate overall musicianship.  Applicants should demonstrate playing their instrument(s) in a lead role (soloing) as well as backing up other soloists.  For those musicians who also sing, one of the videos should be of a song where they are singing lead.  Harmony singing is encouraged, though not mandatory.

3.    Any questions about the process or the program can be addressed to Darby Brandli at or to  Darby  will also be happy to answer any questions by telephone at 510-735-6364.

4.    The application process opens January 1, 2017 and ends January 31, 2017.
We are all very proud of the talented young musicians who have been selected and performed at IBMA in the past.  We are fortunate to have so much talent in California and be able to offer this life changing opportunity to a select group of young musicians.
